Private Equity Acquisition Seasonality

A customer asked a question about our portfolio company data. While I was looking at the data, I wondered if there was any seasonality to private equity acquisitions. The quick answer is, not much.

There’s a small, seasonal bump in December as transactions try to close before year-end (there goes the holiday season for the deal team), and another small increase around Mid-Summer. But even these are quite small effects. Overall, private equity deal flow is surprisingly consistent month-to-month throughout the year.

The data in the chart below is compiled from only the last three years of portfolio company platform acquisitions (excludes add-on acquisitions) by the firms in our private equity database – nearly 10,000 transactions in total.
