Gender Representation in Private Equity
In advance of the Energy Game Change Conference, which includes a Women in Alternatives networking event, we reviewed all senior-level deal team members employed by U.S.-based private equity firms to understand female leadership representation across all the firms compared to those that specifically invest in energy-related companies.
Across U.S.-Based PE Firms
Across all U.S.-based private equity firms, females represented only 9% of the senior-level positions. The chart above shows percentages of females & males for typical titles. There is a noticeable decline in female representation as titles increase in seniority. Remarkably, only 3% of private equity founders are women.
Across PE Energy Investors
Focusing on the subset of private equity firms that invest in energy-related companies, the percentage of female leadership representation is slightly higher at 9.7%. Private equity firms, like energy companies, might benefit from increasing their focus on earning a Social License to Operate with programs geared toward Corporate Social Responsibility.
Data Study Notes: For this study, we included only senior-level dealmaker titles plus CFO and Head of Marketing. (Dealmaker titles include: Founder, Partner, Managing Director, President, Vice President, Principal, Director, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Executive Officer, Investment Director, Portfolio Manager, Head of Business Development, and similar). We specifically excluded junior titles and support functions like: Analysts, Associates, Legal, Investor Relations, Human Relations, Administration.
