Private Equity Investments in Battery Companies

Private equity firms have shown an increased interest in battery companies over the past decade, with the exception of 2020, an anomaly year for all investments. Consistent with this trend, 2022 is on pace for a record year for PE firms investing in battery companies.

Our M&A Research Database shows 321 historical platform investments in battery companies, including:

  • 122 platform acquisitions since 2012 (see graph below)
  • 24 platform acquisitions in 2021 alone.

June 2022Raiffeisen Invest Private Equity invested in AVILOO (Wiener Neudorf, Austria), a developer of battery diagnostics for electric and plug-in hybrid cars.

May 2022Ara Partners invested in Blue Whale Materials (Washington, DC, US), a lithium-ion battery recycling platform.

January 2022The Carlyle Group completed a growth investment in NineDot (New York, NY, US), a clean-tech developer that designs and deploys community-scale energy generation and battery storage projects.

July 2021Valor Equity Partners invested in Redwood Materials (Carson City, NV, US), a battery recycling startup that makes electric vehicles and sustainable materials for circular supply chains.
